Clarkson University’s RiverU, a collaboration between Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries and the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, is a six-credit summer program for any college or highly motivated high school student with an interest in the environment. RiverU is designed to help students define and direct their academic and future career path by connecting with professionals in the workplace through course-related field trips, while gaining valuable science, engineering and policy credits over the summer.
RiverU is ecology, environmental engineering and water policy injected into a real-world context, where connections to environmental issues are discovered through experiential, directed and hands-on learning in the classroom, lab, workplace & field. A career day with experts and professionals will allow students to build relationships for potential internships, see how and where classroom theory is put to work in the real world, and hear about new careers that are emerging in a new age of environmentalism.
Classes are held at Beacon Institute’s Center for Environmental Innovation and Education on historic Denning’s Point in Beacon, NY, on the shores of the world-renowned Hudson River. The program schedule includes three days on the Clearwater and field trips. Read more about the courses offered.
Residential students will enjoy safe, high-quality, modern campus dormitory housing and parking at a nearby college. Double (and a few single) occupancy rooms are available with many campus amenities. Breakfast and lunch are included on class days for both the residential and commuter options. All meals are provided while on Hudson River Sloop Clearwater three-day sail. Program transportation is provided for group trips. Residential students will need individual transportation from dorm to class facilities.
Due to the River University’s intensive schedule and the individual attention each student will receive, only 25 students will be selected to participate. Early application is encouraged.
